Usually when an organisation is busy it’s a good thing. But, for The Trussell Trust – the UK’s largest foodbank network – being busier than ever in 2017 is not good news. It is a reflection of the fact that more and more people are struggling to feed themselves and their families. The importance of the Trust’s work in helping people in crisis was recognised recently when it received the 2017 Observer Food Monthly Award for Outstanding Achievement.
The scale of The Trussell Trust’s operation is staggering. Between April 2016 and March 2017, a record 1.2 million emergency food parcels were handed out. And there is concern about meeting the future demand. In the period up to Christmas 2017, Universal Credit rollout will accelerate significantly, putting about 100 foodbanks under severe pressure.
