Camden performs badly in free school meal delivery – children miss out

Camden Council is failing to deliver free school meals to those in need according to the lead story in the Camden New Journal on 19 July 2018.  The borough has been named as the “worst performing council in the country for delivering free school meals.”  The Journal refers to Government findings which have revealed that Camden is the only area in England where more than 40 per cent of families entitled to free school meals were not accessing them.  This means that children missed out on £401,035 worth of food equating to 200,450 school meals. Camden Council insisted that no actual food had been wasted due to the poor uptake and that the council was not paying for unclaimed meals. Councillor Angela Mason, Camden’s schools’ chief, is quoted as saying that they were trying to identify the reasons for the shortfall and are “currently putting considerable effort into improving the take-up of this vital entitlement.”
